Free Meals for Children Extended through End of 2020-2021 School Year

Canyons School District is extending its free meal service through the end of the school year.

This means all students — whether they are learning in the classroom or remotely — can receive free lunch and breakfast through June, 30, 2021.

There’s no need to apply for the U.S. Department of Agriculture-authorized benefit, which was originally set to expire at the end of December. All students are automatically eligible.

Canyons District is committed to ensuring no child goes hungry and has sponsored free meals throughout the pandemic. The USDA waiver provides the flexibility and funding to ensure nutritious meals continue to reach all children at a time of rising food insecurity.

Schools will continue serving meals in their cafeterias per the staggered schedules they’ve established to promote physical distancing. Online and at-home learners may pick up meals at specific times and locations as designated by each school. Additionally, these families may pick up meals for any siblings who are 18 years of age or younger. Schools ask, however, that they preorder their meals so that the kitchens know how much food to prepare.

It’s Time Again to Reconsider your Learning Options, Requests Accepted Now Through Jan. 7

With the end of the second term approaching, we are again providing students a chance to revisit their learning options.

The middle-school window for submitting end-of-grading-period change requests is Monday, Dec. 14 through Thursday, Jan. 7. Those wanting to shift from in-person to one of two remote learning options available, or from remote learning to in-person instruction, will need to complete a change-request form by Jan. 7. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any late requests.

Learning option changes will take effect with the start of the third quarter on Tuesday, Jan. 19. No action is required of families who wish to stay with their chosen path.

Throughout the pandemic, we have worked to provide families with in-person and remote learning options so they can choose what works best for them given their educational needs and health considerations. This second change-request period is consistent with that commitment.

The three learning options available are the same as described at the beginning of the year: In-Person Instruction; Online Instruction; or Parent-Guided, District-Supported At Home Instruction. An explanation of those options can be found at canyonsdistrict.org

An email with detailed instructions for submitting change requests is forthcoming from the school.

CSD Streamlines Notification Process for Students After Possible COVID-19 Exposure

Canyons District has streamlined the family-notification process when it has been determined through the contact-tracing process that a student may have been exposed at school by student or employee who has tested positive for COVID-19.

To ensure that families receive the notification, parents of children who will need to quarantine will receive an automated phone call and an email. Parents also will receive a text message if they have signed up for that service in Skyward. The process was put into place in recent weeks and has proven effective in immediately notifying parents of this important information.

The official information will come from the Canyons school nurses, who are at the forefront of the District’s COVID-19 response. Canyons District nurses work hand-in-hand with the Salt Lake County Health Department and other health authorities to confirm test results, conduct contact tracing, answer questions of parents, students and employees, and help track the District’s overall COVID-19 cases.
