Looking to Transfer Schools? Submit Your School Choice Applications Starting Dec. 1

  • Uncategorized

Education opens doors, and in Canyons District, we believe all children deserve access to a quality education and learning opportunities suited to their interests and needs. Every child is different, and public education isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. School choice means providing parents with options, and the freedom to choose the best options for their child. Under Utah law, students who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school — the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries — may apply to transfer to another school by submitting a Standard Open Enrollment Form. In Canyons District, families are able to submit these forms online from the comfort of their home or office using our Online Permit Portal. For the coming school year, the window for applying for the school-choice permits will open Dec. 1 and end Feb. 21. School transfers are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Union Is Thankful

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we the administration, faculty, and staff at Union Middle School would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported us during our fire reconstruction.  We would like to thank the district office for supporting us with the additional manpower necessary to open up the school immediately following the fire. We would like to thank the Canyons School Board for their support throughout this reconstruction process. We would like to thank the construction crew, technology crew, and disaster relief crew for their round the clock efforts to have our building ready for returning to a regular class day beginning December 2.  We would like to thank our amazing students for their positive energy and attitude. Despite having to adjust to a half day schedule and changing locations of classrooms, our students have remained focused on learning. We are especially thankful to our community of parents who have shown nothing but support throughout this endeavor. We thank you for the supportive emails and words of encouragement and for entrusting us with your students everyday while we rebuild Union and return to normalcy.  Thank you to everyone. Our hearts are full this holiday season.

When Duty Calls • The Vital Role of the Education Support Professional

When Tyler Allred wrapped up his work at Union Middle on the evening of October 23, the floors were polished, the windows were washed and the hallways looked clean and tidy — just like usual. As the facility manager of a 50-year-old school, Allred always made sure his building was as well-maintained as it could possibly be; so much so, that visitors were known to say that they couldn’t tell the building’s age because it was so impressively spotless.

But on October 24, as thick clouds of black smoke started billowing from a social studies instruction room, all of that changed. An electrical fire, believed to have started with a Chromebook charging station, was reported around 5 a.m. When Allred got the word, his blood went cold at the thought of what had happened.
