Union Middle School is excited to announce Areli Nevarez as the 2019-20 Teacher of the Year. Areli has been Union’s Dual Language Immersion teacher for the past 4 years. She is a prime example of the Canyons School District’s vision of growth mindset. Her impressive classroom routines, academic rigor, and high level of student engagement have led countless teachers and administrators from all over the country to observe her instructional practice and classroom environment. She has also given presentations at state DLI conferences where she has modeled her teaching technique and learning strategies. Her teaching talent and devotion to her students has led to superior results. On last year’s state assessment, 100% of her 8th grade students demonstrated Spanish proficiency on the state assessment.
This past fall, Union Middle experienced a fire which led to a lot of disruption and challenges for teachers and students. During this time, Areli Nevarez pitched in where ever there was a need. Despite this challenging time, Areli was heard frequently saying, “There is always something to smile about.” Her optimism helped remind colleagues of the importance of staying positive for all of Union’s students, teachers, and staff. One of her colleagues has described Areli as “the most hardworking, most professional, most positive teacher and colleague that any one of us has ever met.”
Kelly Tauteoli, the school principal, has described Areli Nevarez as having a never ending positive attitude and desire to learn. She is very open to coaching and public practice and takes feedback with enthusiasm. She is always tirelessly improving her practice and pursuing her educational growth. Union Middle is very excited and proud to recognize Areli Nevarez as the 2019-20 Teacher of the Year.
