Union Middle School Disclosure 2024 - 25

Welcome to Union Middle School!

Union MS Value Statement:  Guiding Principles:

  • Every Student can succeed.
  • In Every Classroom we are valued and appreciated.
  • Every Day we support each other in excellence.

Union MS School Wide Expectations:

Throughout the building and school year we will reference our school wide academic and behavioral expectations through Bobcat’s Show RESPECT:

  • FOR SELF.
  • FOR OTHERS
  • FOR MATERIALS.

Academic Grades:

The primary goal of grading is to provide high quality feedback to the parent/guardian and students, enabling them to clearly understand a student’s progress, appropriately support the learning process, and encourage student success. Grades are available at: http://www.skyward.canyonsdistrict.org

Late Work and Retake Process:

Assignments and assessments help teachers guide students’ learning by seeing what they can and cannot do. They are critical measures of student understanding; therefore, we provide students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding. Prior to retaking an assessment, you will be required to participate in a review process.

Due Dates:

You should make up missing assignments and retake assessments throughout the quarter in order to show your understanding of course materials. Teachers will accept late work from the beginning of the quarter until the mid-term date listed below. Work from the second half of the quarter will be accepted until the last day of the quarter. Be ready to complete at least 1 assignment per week and at least 3 formal assessments per quarter. Teachers will update grades weekly. This allows teachers to give you feedback, gauge your understanding and provide further instruction, as needed.

Late work and retakes will be accepted for each term until the following dates by 3:20 pm:

  • Quarter 1: Mid-term: September 20, 2024; End of Quarter: October 25, 2024
  • Quarter 2: Mid-term: December 2, 2024; End of Quarter: January 16, 2025
  • Quarter 3: Mid-term: February 14, 2025; End of Quarter: March 21, 2025
  • Quarter 4: Mid-term: May 2, 2025; End of Quarter: May 30, 2025

Weighted Grading:

Grades at Union Middle School will be determined by assessments and assignments weighted as follows:

  • Assessments will be weighted as 80% of the overall grade (test, labs, projects, essays, etc.).
  • Assignments will be weighted as 20% of the overall grade (practice).

Schoolwide Grading Scale:

          A Exceeding Standards 90%-100%

          B Meeting Standards  80%-89%

          C Approaching Standards 70% – 79%

          D Just Starting 60%-69%

          F/NP Not Proficient 59% – 0%

Canvas:

Students will use a platform called Canvas to access materials and assignments for each class. Students will often complete assignments in the Canvas platform and teachers will grade the work and offer feedback on the platform.  However, to check the status of your grades, please refer to the Skyward grading system, not Canvas.

Online Grades:

Student grades for all classes will be available at: http://www.skyward.canyonsdistrict.org

Individuals with Exceptionalities:

If you have a disability and need accommodations in connection with your learning, please speak with your counselor and/or administrator.  We are here to help.

Citizenship Grades:

Citizenship Grades will be reflect mastery of skills in non-academic areas of behavior and work ethic based on the following rubric:

Student Behavior Expectations 2024-2025

Following is a list of Union Middle School (UMS) School Expectations that are critical for all students to understand and observe.Complete district policies are available online at https://www.canyonsdistrict.org/policies/student/

Attendance Policies:

Attendance and punctuality are critical for academic success. Daily instruction including explanations, discussions and clarifications that take place in the classroom are invaluable components of a student’s learning experience.  Frequent absence or tardiness disrupt your educational opportunities and reduce interaction with teachers and peers, classroom participation, learning experiences, and other valuable opportunities. When a student is absent from school for one or more periods, a parent or guardian should call the Attendance Office (801)-826-7510 on the day of the absence.Attendance is an essential component to academic success.  When you are absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get the work missed from teachers and make arrangements to turn in missing work/assignments. Attendance may impact the student’s citizenship grade. Being on time to class means that you are in your classroom when the bell stops ringing. Tardies may impact the student’s citizenship grade.

See Union MS Attendance Policy on https://unionmiddle.canyonsdistrict.org/

The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  Students are requested to leave all valuable items at home. Locker combinations should not be shared with anyone.

Lost and Found:

If you lose something, check the Lost and Found bin in the lower hallway. Canyons School District is not responsible for any personal property which is lost, stolen, or vandalized, or which may have been entrusted for storage and/or safekeeping by Canyons School District or any employee of Canyons School District. Lost and found items not claimed will be donated at the end of each quarter to a local charitable organization.

Multimedia

Throughout the year, students will be shown clips for educational instruction purposes that are rated G and PG. If students are going to view a full length PG movie, the teacher will send home notification and a permission slip.  Movies with higher ratings than PG are not allowed in middle school.

Personal Electronic Devices:

Personal technology devices (i.e. cell phone, gaming devices, smart watches, tablet, earbuds/headphones, etc.) should not be used during instructional time without permission from the teacher.  All devices need to remain in the student’s backpack/locker. If it is necessary for a student to bring a personal electronic device for communication for before or after school, the device needs to remain turned off during school, as well as during any school-sponsored activities. If a parent/guardian needs to communicate with your student, please contact the front office at 801.826.7500.

If a student is having difficulty following this policy, the teacher or administrator will take the personal electronic device to the Attendance Office for safekeeping. After the first two offenses, a student can pick up the device from the Attendance Office at the end of the day. After the third offense a parent/guardian will be contacted and the phone will be checked-in and held the entire next learning day in the Attendance Office.

Please note: All personal electronic devices are brought to school at the students own risk. Neither the school nor district is liable for loss or damage.

Plagiarism/Cheating:

Union Middle School will be working conscientiously on citation this year; therefore, under no circumstance will plagiarism/cheating be tolerated in any classes. For plagiarism/cheating, students will redo the assignment and parent/guardian will be notified.

Safety:

Safety is everyone’s concern at Union. Students should report anything that is unsafe or can become unsafe to an adult. Students will be expected to comply with safety drills and procedures based on directives provided by school administration and teachers.

School Computer Use:

Each student will be issued a Chromebook to use for the entire school year.  Any student who shows the proper respect to this equipment can enjoy this privilege.
