Engage in Summer Reading

The Importance of Summer Reading

Pleasure reading plays a crucial role in enhancing learning and academics, especially for middle school students. Research indicates that students who do not engage in reading over the summer can experience a decline in their academic skills, often referred to as “summer slide.” For example, the National Summer Learning Association notes that students can lose up to two months of reading proficiency during the summer break. Furthermore, pleasure reading has been shown to reduce mental stress and anxiety. A study from the University of Sussex found that reading can lower stress levels by up to 68%, making it an excellent way to unwind and cope with daily pressures.

Participate in Summer Reading at Union

The Union library media center is holding a summer reading opportunity where students who record their reading during the break can earn treats and receive a ticket for a chance to win exciting prizes in August. Students can participate by logging their reading minutes in Beanstack.  Simply log into Beanstack and record the title of the book and minutes read. Students are encouraged to read 5 books this summer or 1200 minutes to earn treats.  If students cannot log into Beanstack, they can simply fill out the Google form, print it, have a parent sign off and return the form to the library at the start of the school year.  All links are below.
